TAMPA, FL – A 35-year-old man was hospitalized for serious injuries after he was stabbed by a man following a three-vehicle collision on Howard Franklin Bridge Tuesday.
WFLA said for reasons unclear, the 35-year-old man stopped his car in the middle of the bridge and was slumped over. Two vehicle occupants — a 43-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man — tried to help the slumped-over man. The 40-year-old man went to go retrieve something with the hope that it would help the drowsy man.
When the 35-year-old man woke up, he crashed into the vehicle operated by the 40-year-old man before striking another motorist attempting to pass by the crash.
The other motorist who was hit — Patrick Douglas Scruggs — was said to have gotten out of his vehicle and broke the 35-year-old man’s car window. Scruggs had stabbed the 35-year-old man several times, and troopers claimed he intended to harm the man and woman as well.
The man and woman were able to walk away from the escalating situation unharmed. Officials arrested Scruggs, and he faces “aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and burglary of an occupied convenience” charges.
