Accidents of any kind regularly occur when you least expect them, including motorcycle crashes. One minute you could be driving to work or just to a nearby gas station to fill up your tank, and the next, you could be involved in a terrible accident. According to the NHTSA, more than 52% of all motor vehicle accidents happen within five miles of where they live, and 69% happen within ten miles.
As a biker, it is always best to be prepared for anything when you are out on the open road. As a founding member and past National President of The National Academy of Motorcycle Injury Lawyers (NAMIL), our Tampa Bay Motorcycle Accident Injury Lawyers at Whittel & Melton have seen all types of injuries and even deaths to bikers. Our most important piece of advice to bikers is to take care of your health after a crash – do not worry about anything else. You need to prioritize your health and safety and get the medical care you need right away.
Here are a few other tips following a motorcycle accident:
- Do not call your insurance company right away. When you are down on the ground injured, this is not the time to call an insurance company. This the time to call the police and have an ambulance sent to the crash site so that you can get to the hospital right away.
- Do not worry about speaking to any insurance adjusters (your own or the other driver’s) about your accident in the hours or days after your crash. Do not speak to an insurance company about your accident right away. You do not have to answer any of their questions until you speak to your lawyer. You should not sign anything until you are in the right frame of mind and have your attorney review it first.
- Request a copy of your crash report. You may not be aware that you can get a crash report online. You can go here to purchase a copy of your crash report if you are having trouble obtaining one.
- Document your injuries, doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, therapy appointments, etc. Keep notes of the dates you received treatment and the costs incurred. Take photos of all your injuries from the motorcycle crash and keep a daily log of how your injuries have impacted your daily life. Make sure you keep copies of all your medical bills, prescription costs, and other documents pertaining to your injuries.
